Evans Fed win.jpgKevin Evans became the latest fancier to do the double – topping the Derwent Valley Federation and West Cumbria Amalgamation result sheets.

A yearling blue cock won a desperately close finish, pipping the neighbouring loft od Chris Wilson and Martin Johnston by decimals.

The birds had been liberated in a south west wind at Stratford at 1pm and Kevin – who flies as Evans and Abraham as a tribute to his late flying partner Willie Abraham – clocked the winner at 4-13 only a second behind Wilson and Johnston, whose loft is 27 yards away.

There’s quite a story attached to the winning pigeon who is being raced on the roundabout system and is a Lambrecht, off pigeons obtained from Steve Foster and Charlie Mellors.

Kevin explains: “He was fairly late bred, and I had to rush him to get in the race team. He was very late back from the first two training tosses he had and he started to drop at various other lofts.

“I never had to go for him because he was chased and he came back home. Once he started racing he never did that and has been a consistent pigeon. I always felt that he would prove a decent old bird.”

Kevin also praised his loft helper Brian Carlton who plays a key role in exercising the pigeons.

Derwent Valley Federation fanciers dominated the result sheet, talking the first 17 positions before the first West Cumberland Federation member, Steve Chambers.

After some excellent races this was the first real test for the Amalgamation birds in the strong wind and there were a few empty perches by nightfall.

The inland programme continues this week-end with a race from Windrush, but the first channel race from Carentan is only a fortnight away.
