Reeves bros.jpgBig race winners from Silloth are as rare as snow in July – but the town had one at the week-end.

Brian and Peter Reeves, topped the West Cumbria Amalgamation and Derwent Valley Federation from the Bedhampton race on Sunday.

Liberated at 9am in a strong south west wind the brothers, who have been flying together for over 40 years, clocked their two-year-old blue cock at 2-06pm to land the double.

Silloth are the longest fliers in the Amalgamation so victories are rare, and the Reeves rothers only previous Fed topper was over ten years ago.

In actual fact club colleague Dennis Creighton was second in the Federation the previous week at the first channel race from Carentan.

Brian says: “Silloth fanciers have won the Federation from over the water before but it’s very rare our members even make the Fed sheet.

“There are only four members in the Silloth club and we are all over the age of 70. In fact if it wasn’t for the Netherton club we wouldn’t be competing.

“On basket night we take our birds through to their club and to save us hanging about they load them onto the transporter for us. I’d just like to say a big thank-you to the Netherton club as a whole.”

The winning pigeon is a Vandanabeele who has been a very consistent member of the loft.

In the previous inland race from Marlborough he won the club and as 16th Fed. It was his third win in the Silloth club this season.

“He’s had tickets as a youngster and a yearling and he is one of those pigeons you know is just so consistent. We have him flying on the roundabout system,” says Brian.

The brothers sent 16 to the race and got 14 on the day – with another the next morning after the 295 mile fly.

This week-end the West Cumbria Amalgamation birds will have their second test over the channel from Fougeres.

In the picture Peter holds the winning pigeon while Brian has Whisky, the Patterdale terrier who is the silent partner - going in and out of the loft without the pigeons turning a feather.
